The Indian government has taken decisive action against digital piracy. In 2023, the Government amended the Cinematograph Act, 1952, to include specific measures against digital piracy. Sections 6AA and 6AB of the Act now clearly prohibit unauthorized recording and transmission of any part of a film. The amendments include strict punishment of a minimum three months imprisonment and a fine of Rs 3 lakh, which can be extended up to three years imprisonment and a fine up to five percent of the audited gross production cost.
