In Germany and many other European countries, ( Freikörperkultur or "Free Body Culture") is a long-standing tradition that views social nudity as a natural, healthy, and non-sexual way to connect with nature and promote body acceptance.
The gray area has long been a source of frustration for child protection advocates and legislators. The case of Sebastian Edathy, a former German politician who was investigated for purchasing such "borderline" nude images of boys, ignited a political firestorm. In its aftermath, there was a strong push, including from the German Kinderschutzbund (Child Protection Alliance), to make the commercial trade of all nude images of children a criminal offense, regardless of their content, to close this loophole. However, legal experts have cautioned that such a move must be carefully balanced to avoid criminalizing innocent parental photography.
