Tadeo Jones is an original creation by Enrique Gato. He was intentionally designed to be a subversion of the typical action hero. Unlike the suave and fearless Indiana Jones, Tadeo is a well-meaning but accident-prone Spanish construction worker living in Chicago who dreams of becoming an archaeologist. This "everyman" quality, combined with his relentless optimism and bad luck, has earned him the affectionate nickname of "el Indiana Jones castizo" in the Spanish press, a term that highlights his authentically Spanish, down-to-earth nature.
Five years later, the sequel, Tadeo Jones 2: El Secreto del Rey Midas ( Tad the Lost Explorer and the Secret of King Midas ), proved the first film was no fluke. Once again, it was a box office powerhouse, grossing another €17.5 million in Spain.
