His partially autobiographical first novel, Kontrollverlust (Loss of Control), was published in 1988 and was nominated for the Aspekte literary prize. He later published Lord Müll and Viertes Deutschland (A Fourth Germany), the latter of which earned him the prestigious Alfred Döblin Achievement Award in April 1991. This accolade solidified his reputation in the cultural scene of his hometown, Schwerin.
