The original standalone N64 emulators ( wii64-ps3 , N64onPS3 ) are largely abandoned projects not updated in over a decade. However, the RetroArch cores for the PS3 are actively maintained and receive updates.

The most high-profile example is a fan project simply titled , which is currently in active development for the PC. This version runs natively on Windows, offers high-resolution rendering, supports modern monitors, and allows for modding.

Released in 1996 for the Nintendo 64, Mario Kart 64 was a landmark title. It was the first 3D game in the series, featuring eight playable characters (Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Wario, and Bowser) across 16 tracks.
