The series opens in 105 AC, during the golden age of House Targaryen. The Old King Jaehaerys is dead, and the Great Council has just passed him over to make his grandson, Viserys I (Paddy Considine), the new King of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men. Viserys is a kind and learned man, but he is ill-suited for a time of crisis. The crisis comes swiftly: his beloved Queen Aemma (Sian Brooke) is struggling with yet another difficult pregnancy.
