Counter-Radicalization: By using humor, trendy video formats, and relatable language, santri creators promoted Wasathiyah (moderate Islam). They addressed social issues like religious intolerance and extremism by providing context-heavy, compassionate interpretations of faith.

In 2021, many santri have taken to social media to express their support for marginalized communities and to condemn acts of intolerance. For example, the #IndonesiaToleran (Indonesia is Tolerant) campaign, initiated by a group of young santri, aimed to promote interfaith dialogue and understanding.

The concept of santri emerged in the early 20th century, as Indonesia began to experience a significant Islamic revival. During this period, Islamic education became more formalized, and pesantren sprouted across the archipelago. Santri were initially seen as the products of these Islamic educational institutions, equipped with knowledge of Islamic theology, jurisprudence, and Arabic language.
