Instead of giving his own opinion, Tabari operates like a supreme judge. He gathers all the authentic reports (athar) from the Prophet’s companions (Sahaba) and their successors (Tabi’un), chains them with their narrations (isnad), and then weighs the evidence. He masterfully explains the Quran through the Quran, then through the Sunnah, and then through the sayings of the earliest generations.
